I have used solid colors, gradients, and about 3 or 4 images from /usr/share/wallpapers ( No-Ones-Laughing-3.jpg, Dasding.jpg, Time-For-Lunch-2.jpg, kdm_bg.jpg). I have set the images to be tiled when a pattern, and scaled. The image will appear un-tiled behind the login window (which you will not see until that window closes). These same images work flawlessly in my KDE desktop background. Actually, they worked flawlessly in my MDK 8.1 setup with the same machine.
