Now:
 ~ $ rpm -q kdebase
kdebase-2.2.2-54mdk
 ~ $ ps ax | grep arts
17338 ?        S      0:01 /usr/bin/artsd -F 12 -S 4096 -a alsa -r 48000 -b
16 -
21712 pts/1    S      0:00 egrep arts
 ~ $ artsplay /usr/share/sounds/error.wav
--> mooeekk
 ~ $ noatun
unix_connect: can't connect to server
(unix:/tmp/mcop-ahlbrink/trine_biologie_Uni-Osnabrueck_DE-43ba-3c7121dc)
Launched ok, pid = 7872
--> no sound
 ~ $ ps ax | grep arts
 ~ $

I tried it with a different user account or root account _and_ removed
~/.kde, ~/.kderc and /tmp stuff
The _only_ difference is that noatun first comes up without unix_connect
error message, but artsd was also killed. A second start of noatun or the
attempt of playing sound with noatun then gave famous error msg.

Do you want to have core dumps, strace output, my head...
