I think you are both right (or wrong :).
The problem is, that the kernel has the wrong kernel version number.
Currently I compile all kernels from Mandrake by myself because they
are 2.4.18 Kernels and not 2.4.17. I name them 2.4.18-0.xsm (Mandrake
would should have named it 2.4.18-0.xmdk)

The reason why I rename it is the CVS patch from IEEE1394 (this one
requires the "2.4.18" name or else compilation will fail).
