Hi!

I did an expert Installation (I have a relatively complicated
partition tabling ;) with individual rpm packet selection.
I did load my MDK 8.1 package selection without problems
(some packages like grub and hdparm were missing, but I found
that there are two selections on the disk and maybe I didn't
select some of these in the first place, i.e. not that
important :) ). It was a german installation.

First dome dependency notes:

gnome-control-center-plus: Doesn't this depend on gnome-control-center ?

Also: Why isn't gphoto2 chosen over/in addition to gphoto ?
(Maybe it's only installed when having a corresponding camera connected,
didn't check that, as I have too many USB devices ;-)
Also info wasn't selected as to be install. Hmm, I ask myself, if I forgot
to include the console tools selection...

One install part wasn't translated: "Install system updates"
linuxconf-lang.de was not selected in german install.
Not important for me, but: netscape-francais was not included,
though I had selected "french" as extra language.
Also while installation the splash screens (banner or whatever this
is officially called) were in english (except buttons, remaining time
and some of the headlines). Some texts were placed to high (Spiele (Games),
MandrakeCampus, Internet and Messaging) and would overlap with the image
near the headline, I think someone else reported already about f.e.
"toll free" etc.

While switching back to the console to check what's going on,
I saw thousand times (at least):
"rpmdb: var/lib/rpm/Basenames: No such file or directory"
(Probably a wrong path in one of the script, didn't seem
to hinder the installation, /mnt/var/lib/Basenames grew normally).
This slowed down the installation process considerably.

Another thing about the kernel used in install: there were many
modules tainting the kernel (probably wrong license included ?)
sd_mod, usbcore, usb-ohci, af_packet, serial, parport, parport_pc,
imm, ppa, jbd, ext3 fat, vfat, reiserfs, jfs, xfs_support, xfs

Like some already suggested, me too misses much a go back button,
in case you pressed a wrong button or similar (this happened twice
to me during the installation).

After installation booting went fine :)

First checked for using gcombust/mkisofs:
**WARNIGN**: Installation problem? No set-uid bit on /usr/bin/{mkisofs,readcd,cdda2wav)
Is this normal for msec Level 3 (Medium) ?
Grepping in /etc/security did not reveal mkisofs, wvdial was missing as
well. Is this the correct directory for searching the programs requiring
set-uid bit ?

As my $HOME still existed I was greeted with a friendly GNOME bootup :)

Next check: xterm: wrong fontsize (at least for 1024x768 to large) and
Euro Symbol does not work. Reason: vt100.font setting in
/etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm is set to a Unicode font instead to iso8859-15.
(and 120 is enough, 140 IMO to large).
My setting currently is:
.vt100.font: -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-c-*-iso8859-15
If you really need to use Unicode, please fix Euro symbol! (in german
layout it is on alt-gr-e).
XEmacs: I don't understand, why xemacs ignores Emacs app-default..
(Euro symbol does not work here). But I really like the tab folders
(as I normally use emacs, I did not see them before). Also emacs looks
really horrible with the green colors and the grey Gnome toolbar ;-)
Kwrite shows me ??? with Euro, same with kate (Kwrite printing produces
these ? as well, good WISYWIG works there ;-). Strange, because both
use a iso8859-15 font (I also tried explicitely choosing misc-fixed, but
did not succeed). Seems that the keyboard mapping with these programs is
wrong.

But no for a real nasty bug: When I press the normal alt key I get
the menu event (With 8.1 this was the windows key). Is this fixed
already ? OTOH pressing the windows key does not work at all...
(Remember: iso-8859-15, de_DE@euro)

Another interesting side-note: filenames beginning with € (euro-Symbol :)
are sorted after their second letter (i.e. the symbol is ignored). But
only for xterm and nautilus (konqueror places it as the last file), did
not check more file managers.

klprfax does not start, there is a wrong command line parameter "-"
reported.

After testing koffice starting with kword, I get the feeling that
the Euro problems concerns all KDE applications which use the standard
font selector (same behavior as above, kspread not working as well).
Konqueror was the only kde app up to now showing the Euro symbol correctly.

When starting abiword I got a warning that it was not able to add its
fonts to the X font path. (Probably harmless). Well here I can only insert
Euro symbol by the "Insert special character symbol" (with altgr-e it shows
the currency symbol), but it least it works :). So up to now I have found
no gnome program where the Euro symbol does not work (except when you choose
a font which does not have such a symbol ;) Concerning Abiword: I don't know
how to change the KBD character set, the font requester has no choice for
that.

Of course I might have reported too much, but I don't remember
all the reports posted here in detail.

And finally I can play the great games lbreakout2 and frozen-bubbles :-)))
Thanks for listening, see report for more details :)

More reports to follow if I find more interesting bugs ;-)
