Stock 8.2beta3 install, hardware: p4 2.2ghz, 512mb ram, more inquries will

I've noticed that a couple of programs take a while to startup.
When I do:
strace ssh other_local_host
it hangs for quite a while (5-6 seconds maybe) at this step:
gettimeofday({1014597446, 127840}, NULL) = 0
poll( <unfinished ...>
A very similar hang (gettimeofday) happened when strace'ing konsole. These
don't happen all the time, maybe just half.
When starting MPlayer, this line is near the beginning:
Linux RTC init: open: Permission denied
