This standard kernel is much better! I am able to unplug/replugin the laptop without issue, I also am able to use the Fn keys. However, 2 problems remain:
1) if pcmcia is enabled at boot, attempting to resume from suspend will still cause Inspiron 8000 to reboot. This is a holdover from the previous kernels after 2.4.17-16mdk. 2) In this kernel, Even if I disable dri, glx, and all of the modules in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, the system will bring up the video portion (not reboot) but lock up the hard drive before the image is complete. The light for the hard drive also is permanently lit although there is no cpu race condition. I also am unable to use even the magic keys and must manually reboot (turn the laptop off/on). In previous kernel (2.4.17-20mdk) that I built without apic, I was able to get a successful suspend/resume if I did not have pcmcia service enabled at boot and I disabled drm. Also, I noticed in /etc/sysconfig/apm-scripts/resume.d/4XFree #insert certain modules for Dell i8000 #insmod agpgart #insmod r128 and in suspend.d/5XFree # unload certain modules for Dell i8000 # rmmod r128 agpgart and I tried to uncomment and run with drm but it did not help in previous kernel. As a matter of fact it made things slightly worse ( I had to Alt+SysRq+i at least twice to get back to console mode (which was not visable except for the top 1/4 of the video screen where there was a black background and jarbled visuals which appeared to be a compressed console. I could run commands, I just could not see the text. ===== SI Reasoning [EMAIL PROTECTED] A requirement of creativity is that it contributes to change.
