Yes, it does it as one of three possible operating modes. IIRC you get 
complete journalling by default but can switch some off to potentially 
increase speed. Either way, I've not currupted an ext3 partition yet.

I say ``potentially'' because journalling can sometimes provide an equivalent 
of ``elevator'' writes and/or write clustering and so actually *improve* 
real-life disk performance!
