You do not need to be root anymore to burn cd, just in the cdwriter group, 
XcdRoast must be broken in this regards.

I do not think so, you must be able to burn as user, given than you are
in cdwriter group.

Anyway, does it work with command line (I burn CD/DVD everyday with this
cdrecord version, and only has a pb with higher than 700 MB CDR, it is
ok with DVDR and cdrecord-dvdhack, though)
