What do you have in your /etc/modules.conf?

I've had the same experience with the betas and have gotten the default
kernels to work with mine by commenting out some of the lines and
modifying one.  So it now reads:

# alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-ymfpci
alias sound-slot-0 ymfpci
# above snd-card-ymfpci snd-pcm-oss

Two of the three lines were making it unusable and the one that I kept
in there, I changed to point to the *real* device driver.

Give that a go, and hopefully it'll work for you as well.
