I looked into the man page to see if I like this behavior or not but I 
do not understand the difference between -merge and -load as desribed there.
On the other hand, I think this script usually does what I expect. If i 
write

*.background: #284d49
*.foreground: Yellow
XLoad.showLabel: false

into ~/.Xdefaults my xterm is yellow on darkgreen.
