ther's no meter during kernel launch and hardware detection > have some other piece of flash to let people know that > the system has not crashed. the cursor is blinking but vene that may make me feel it crash or stop somewhere > message like describing what is going on and a "please > be patient" or something. no way. Imagine my kernel hang with no warning, I may wait during 1 hour with nothing sometimes when windows boot and I have unpluged the network it takes times because it tries to reconnect everything ( network connections ). Many times I'm willing to think that it's down ( the same for other people ). And this feeling happen during DOS mode ( blinking cursor ) and windows boot screen ( with the blue progress bar at the downside ). At the contrary, If I was able able to see message or other things printing I will never think about that. Display kernel messages in this nice bootsplash box is not an issue AFAIK. why ? because user can read them ... or ignore them. It's not because they see theses informations that they are going to have headaches or think linux is hard ! They never say that during windows boot when DOS was being launched. On top of that advanced users are happy as they can read kernel message with no pb or ask a newbie with a pb to try to follow them. Last but not least, maybe, one day, the newbie will try to understand what it see scrolling and will discover kernel detections and interesting things ! That's why explanations for drakxtools was so much wanted. Hide everything is not good way. That's the MS way. Provide easy to use OS ( config tools, simplicity, ... ) but don't try to hide everything. catch user curiosity so that they will try to discover the system and so masterise it. They will be happier -- http://linux-wizard.tuxfamily.org/index.html - Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils. -- Hector Berlioz
