Hi,

We're in deep freeze, and it doesn't look like a fix if forthcoming for the
weird textures and funny colors that happen with XFree86-4.2.0 and the
trident 9397-dvd used in some laptops. I KNOW i'm not the only one
having this problem. This problem is there with the XFree packages as
of this morning.

The 4.1.0 driver works with the 4.2.0 server with only minimal
problems.. the only problem i've seen is that the Xv extensions don't work.
At least the rest of it works. Reverting to 3.6 is NOT a good option.

Please, can we include the old driver as well, maybe make it
trident_410_drv.o or something, and make the installer aware that this
is a problem?

Also, what troubleshooting has been done on this indicates that part
of the problem is in the driver's init code.. once it messes up the colors,
the only way to see if they're right again is to power off and power the
computer back on again - which means testing the X settings during
install with the defective driver will make it impossible tell if the system
works after changing the driver - even if a different driver is loaded that
WILL work.

The installer can detect the Trident 9397DVD correctly. Would
be nice if it used the 4.1.0 driver by default. This chip was used in
Gateway Solo 9100 machines with DVD player (chassis E6) and some
IBM Thinkpads. There may be other machines as well, but from what
I've seen, all of them have the same problem with the weird colors and
textures. Finding the XFree 4.1.0 rpm's on the web, installing them,
copying the driver to a neutral place, re-installing 4.2.0, then copying the
driver into the appropriate directory is not exactly newbee friendly!

        Is this a do-able change?

        V.
