I noticed it at well, and I do not use cookers version of freetype2, so I suppose it 
is something in X.
Anyway, I saw it only in the konsole (which is funny because it starts konsole-noxft) 
under KDE3 (were
starting konsole -noxft locks up kicker btw), but I didn't check much other programs.
I got rid of it by disabling AA for normal sized fonts in XftConfig:
match
        any size > 8
        any size < 15
        all weight < bold
        all slant == roman
edit
        antialias = false;

(the weigth and slant stuff keeps AA for italics and bold enabled, you may want to 
remove these lines
if you think it looks better).
