I've experienced the same problems. 'cept I have an IMAP mailbox with Evolution. Sometimes it forgets my password, other times it simply sits there with a "checking folder 'INBOX' on 'servername.com'" or something to that tune. If I click on the mail account in the folder's list, evolution automatically unselectes it.
I use Evolution with Ximian running on Mandrake 8.1 at work and don't have this problem.
