The following error message was being produced each time I switched to runlevel 5: ERROR: no such user ! Unfortunately this error was not being produced in a log - only on a virtual terminal.
To cut a long story short after a lot of searching it turned out that /usr/sbin/autologin was producing the error. I used drakconf to disable auto login (although it looked like it was disabled already) and the error went away.
