Got me thinking.  It is in fact a brand new machine.  I will try some memory 
tests tomorrow (when back at work), but I decided to install 8.2 on my home 
machine and try the compile.  Guess what?  It works just fine!  I guess that 
pretty much proves it is a machine-related problem.  I wonder though why 
there seem to be quite a few other people having similar problems.
