Goto a terminal with 

ctrl-alt-f3

It doesn't really matter which one you can choose f3-f6. Log in as root. Then 
type this

init 3

init 5

this will restart x with the new settings. Now to get back to x just type

ctrl-alt-f7

You will be looking at a fresh kde3 login screen
