Replying to my own message here... I also noticed the following shortly above 
the errors I received before it stopped on me:

libtool: link: warning: library 
`/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-mandrake-linux-gnu/2.96/../../../libsasl.la' was 
moved.
libtool: link: warning: library `/usr/lib/libsasl.la' was moved.
libtool: link: warning: library 
`/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-mandrake-linux-gnu/2.96/../../../libsasl.la' was 
moved.

not sure if I mentioned this before, but it also creates an a.out file in the 
directory that I run the rpm -ba command from (/usr/src/RPM/SPECS)

So... that's the update...
