Hi! There is a problem with new alsa 0.9 and an old /etc/asound.conf. This file was created with alsactl (which is btw now missing in new alsa-utils?) for alsa 0.5. If this file is present, but the kernel uses alsa 0.9, you cannot use e.g. alsamixer or aconnect from alsa-utils. They will give you strange error messages. Removing the old /etc/asound.conf seems to solve these problems.
