I got a couple of pointers to that package. Always had it installed and
up-to-date (even without an APC UPS), just never realized what it was
for (too obvious of a name maybe :).
Works like a charm. Nice cgis for the graphical readout too.

I can't specifically help you with the PowerChute software but I can
help with the apcupsd package that's in cooker that just got updated
yesterday. As of yesterday that package will support USB.
If you're using devfs it'll show as:
/dev/usb/hid/hiddev0
(though the number can vary anything from 0-9).
