If you do not mind cheating you can get back all the menu listings as well as still be able to add most of the the old applets to the panel by doing as I have done and re-install gnome-core-1.4.0.6-12mdk. I run enlightenment with only the gnome panel (panel as in gnome1 where as gnome-panel is gnome2) and I am able to still use all my shortcuts and seti-applet as well as access the full menu listing.
