I have little to add to this, however a friend and I were talking about
this a couple of weeks ago and were wondering if it would be possible to
run many of the init scripts in parallel. There seem to be several scripts
that could run simultaneously, like bringing up the network and say
starting gpm.

anyway, it's only an idea to be thrown on top of the heap.....
