I have had this directory disappear, then "magically" (I didn't 
actively do anything do make them come back) reappear again later -- no 
packages were installed or upgraded in between.

Is there some cron job that updates these? Or it could have been that I 
ran menudrake and that made them come back--but I don't remember doing 
that. =)
