The way I understand the series of tests (of which the one I changed is one)
is that they are to prevent various possible denial of service attacks.
If that is a worry then iptables rules could be used.

Dave said: "The extra test was put in as defense when multicast breaks and the
I/O code is unable to determine which outbound interface will be used."  I
would assume that when multicast doesn't break that the test isn't needed.  He
did say that in later versions (I assume the alpha ones) that the test was
removed.  All I know is that without the patch ntp-4.1.1 is useless in my
configuration.

Someone (not me) should check how well ntp-4.1.1 works on linux with multicast.
