Well, both of them are used in some projects, so I guess that unless these projects decide on a common library to use, both are necessary. > > There is a rpm of advi on its website (also accessible from the > > freshmeat entry I created a few weeks ago). > > cool, an expert. I guess the main selling point of advi is that it displays dvi, usually generated from latex ... so it's good for maths (and it's mainly being used by researchers to present their work at the moment, but don't forget it's a fairly young project). Advi allows pauses in documents (without using overlays), so you can have "strip tease" slides. There are many kinds of transitions form slides to slides, integration of postscript graphics ... and probably many things I forget (if you want to have a look at the project page, it's at http://pauillac.inria.fr/advi ). > - is there a way to generate html versions for publishing? > (using hevea?) > Yes, and for a good reason: the people who develop advi, hevea, and whizzytex (some emacs binding to see a tex document in realtime, as it is being typed, in an advi window) all work a few meters from each other ;-) > - related to the previous question, why is the manual only available > in dvi... not very internet friendly! > Good remark. I'll send a mail to the advi mailing list to point this out to them. Best, Alan -- The hacker: someone who figured things out and made something cool happen.
