Hi Everyone,
I'm not sure why, but it seems Mandrake is having a very hard time getting a
stable KDE 3.0.x package out. :-( It seems Mandrake's KDE 3.0.1 chokes in
several severe but easily solvable ways.

First on the list of problems is how it expects the system to be setup. For
whatever reason, it doesn't tell prefdm to use kdm3. This caused problems on
my system, since I no longer have KDE2 installed. The q'n'd fix is simple -
edit the /etc/inittab line that says "x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon"
to say:

  x:5:respawn:/opt/kde3/bin/kdm -nodaemon

However this could have been easily solved by simply offering an updated
prefdm rpm or something like that, IMO.

Also, when installing KDE 3.0.1, it does not properly setup KDM3, but
instead gives it a list of all kinds of window managers that are not
installed. The default config from the kdebase3 rpm from this week looks like
this:
"KDE,Gnome,WindowMaker,BlackBox,XFce,AfterStep,IceWM,Sawfish,Fvwm2,Fvwm1,default,failsafe,"

Where on my system, the older KDE 3.0.1 rpm's (the ones that where in /usr)
showed the available WM's as "IceWM, KDE, default, failsafe," In other words,
only what was installed.

Further more, I suspect (although I didn't check before switching to
Texstar's rpms again) that aRts is still broken in the KDE 3.0.1 rpm's from
Mandrake. I do not remember seeing the normal aRts error message that I get
due to my rather odd setup, so I guess (?) that Mandrake still has the bug
that kills off aRts in the RPM's, which Texstar fixed several months ago. :-(

This is extremely disappointing as I know Mandrake's previous KDE RPM
efforts have been top notch, and I'm not quite sure why the last two batches
have been so buggy. This does NOT help me convince my SuSE using friends that
they should try Mandrake.

Any chance Mandrake might issue fixed RPM's soon?

  Thanks,
       Tim
