As far as I'm concerned, that is completely fine. If you have this package installed, then KDE3 is the only KDE you have. Thus you can start KDE3 using /usr/bin/startkde if you don't want to use .kde3. "That would be the login choice of "KDE" as opposed to "KDE 3".
