The simple fact is that if you set this variable any simple command which needs glibc will fail, if you happen to be using glibc-2.2.5. This looks like problem with glibc-2.2.5 and should be fixed. If you happen to know work around to make glibc-2.2.5 work with this variable set I would like to hear about it.
