Disabling esd (going to "null" audio output or direct OSS) solves the problem. This is the only program fucking up thusly. Another problem with the current i586 RPM binary (libxine0-0.9.12-1mdk) is that it doesn't use Win32 DLL; oddly, it looks like merely recompiling the SRPM enables it back.
