Actually the problem is with locales 

[breser@occipital breser]$ rpm -q locales locales-en
locales-2.3.1.3-2mdk
locales-en-2.3.1.3-2mdk

Going back to 1mdk fixes the problem.
2mdk also makes my fonts on Mozilla look really blocky and messed up.
