I had the same thing happen yesterday, when cdrecord reported not finding any CD/RW devices on my system. I found out by looking at the output from 'lsmod' that the ide-scsi modules wasn't loaded. I was able to use 'modprobe ide-scsi' to load it manually,
Similar problem with my Creative Audigy sound card. The module wasn't being loaded at boot time, causing kde's sound demon to complain at login. I was able to load the module using 'modprobe audigy' which fixed it and got sound working again. Also, regarding the sound settings, there were 2 entries in the modules.conf file like this: alias sound emu10k1 alias sound-slot-0 audigy which was causing the emu10k1 driver version 0.19 to be loaded twice and the 0.17 driver to be loaded once, resulting in 3 audio drivers loaded when only one is needed. It looks like just having 'alias sound-slot-0 audigy' is sufficient to get the driver loaded just once.
