I do not see this behavior here.  It works the same as the first line
for both 8.2 and 9.0Beta2 on my machines here.  It sets both the
hostname and domainname properly.

I can certainly see that.  Let me ramble about what I think could be
happening.

1) /etc/sysconfig/network:  I set the DOMAINNAME and HOSTNAME to blank.
2) /etc/dhcpd.conf on the server:
   ddns-update-style none;
   option domain-name "mandrakesoft.com";
   use-host-decl-names on;
