The scenario is 9.0 beta 2 installed from CD-R and one big update of all
cooker packages this morning (~1GB of RPMs).

On restarting after this update the boot got right through to starting X ...
which almost immediately hung, giving a blank screen.

Investigation showed that something was expecting to run

/etc/profile.d/lang.sh

which was missing; a simple

# touch /etc/profile.d/lang.sh

fixed the problem and allowed the login screen to load.
