I noticed this as well, but theres an explanation.

The C++ ABI between GCC 3.1 and 3.2-pre is not binary compatible.  Thus, the 
newer libstdc++ package is NOT compatible with older C++ programs.  
Therefore, they all had to be updated at once.  Just bit the bullet and 
start downloading packages necessary to do one big honkin upgrade.
