the sound device is locked by kde's artsd sound deamon; note that only
one programe can use the sound device at one moment.
so you can only play sound via arts aware apps (kde apps, mplayer,
xine, ...)

and with alsa, the sound is muted by default.
use aumix, kmix, alsamixer, or whatever is your preferred mixer or
whatever mixer you find in menu "Multimedia/Sound" to set up the
volume level to something other than 0 for at least "vol" and "pcm"
(for mp3/ogg), "cd" (to listen at audio cds), ...
