this seems to be a problem with man, as the man function in emacs has
similar problems:
man(1) man(1)
NAME
man - format and display the on-line manual pages
manpath - determine user's search path for man pages
SYNOPSIS
man ^[[22m[^[[1m-acdfFhkKtwW^[[22m] [^[[1m--path^[[22m] [^[[1m-m ^[[4$
[^[[1m-M ^[[4m^[[22mpathlist^[[24m] [^[[1m-P ^[[4m^[[22mpager^[[24m] [^[$
