Do you have some hardware that needs modules installed at boot-time?
If not, perhaps you can manually adjust the /etc/lilo.conf file,
using the rescue disk, so that no initrd is used, then re-run lilo.
I have has some success using this method.  

Else, you could manually create the initrd: 
$ mkinitrd [image] [kernel version] 
after you have used the rescue-disk option to mount your partitions,
then chroot to the appropriate directory under /mnt in the rescue 
directory tree.

Reformatting just seems so drastic!
