1) are you using OSS emulation?, if so, try the xmms alsa plugin (or anything other 
that uses native alsa)
and do not run xmms through soundwrapper (which is the normal config if u click on

is the problem still there with native alsa? is the problem there when using OSS-emu 
withouth artsd?

2) are you using 2 speakers? if so, can you try switching them to see if it is on both 
channels.

3) Also, play a bit with the mixer channels (preferred, although incomprehensible: 
alsamixergui).
I'm wondering if it is really staticy, or that you are just over powering your 
speakers (this also
happens with the old drivers, although at different mixer settings).

ALSA x.5.x had some real bad staticy problems in OSS emulation, but that really seems 
to be solved now.
So better be sure that it is real:)
