(Resending since the original message seems to have been lost in
transfer :-( - there's something wrong with mailing list manager)

I've made a test upgrade on a prepared, clean system:
VIA MVP3 motherboard;
Intel Celeron 566 CPU;
256 MB RAM;
SAMSUNG SV0682D, ATA hard drive (hda);
SAMSUNG CD-ROM SC-148S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive (hdd);
S3 86C368 (Trio3D/2X) 4MB video card;

All information generated by installers (report_bug, ddebug.log etc.)
can be found here:
for 9.0 beta4 installer:

for 8.2 installer:

The procedure I've followed:
1. install Mandrake 8.2 (Polish language for system usage), using two
partitions: one ReiserFS partition for root filesystem (6GB), one 500 MB
swap partition.
Partitions layout (as seen by fdisk after installation):

   Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 832 cylinders
   Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

      Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
   /dev/hda1   *         1       766   6152863+  83  Linux
   /dev/hda2           767       833    537705    5  Extended
   Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary:
        phys=(832, 239, 63) should be (832, 254, 63)
   /dev/hda5           767       833    537673+  82  Linux swap

2. setup proftpd to handle anonymous connections, in /home/ftp
3. mirror Mandrake 8.2 updates in the anonymous ftp dir
(/home/ftp/pub/Mandrake/updates/8.2) with mirrordir tool:
mirrordir -v --no-chown --no-chmod --exclude-glob SRPMS
ftp://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/unix/linux/distributions/Mandrake/updates/8.2/

/home/ftp/pub/Mandrake/updates/8.2/
4. setup MandrakeUpdate to use localhost as security updates source and
install all of them to achieve an up to date installation of 8.2
5. add the following 2 lines in the global section of lilo.conf (to test
for an old bug from 8.2 installer, it's still there in 9.0):
restricted
password=pass
6. run the expert upgrade process from 9.0 beta4 CDs.

So far I've identified and described 2 problems (but there seem to be
more), one of them critical.
You can reach my reports here:
Problem 1 (some important packages aren't upgraded leaving the system in
a barely usable state):
<http://olo.office.altkom.com.pl/domowa/qa/mandrake/beta4/upgrade_8.2-beta4/critical_packages_not_installed/>
Problem 2 (bootloader installation fails if restricted option and
password is used in lilo.conf of the system being upgraded):
