Is this why my USB disk caddy that uses a ScanLogic USB-IDE bridge 
doesn't 'work' ?

I can mount an USB storage device that doesn't have the USB-IDE bridge 
(being a solid state device). Although everything tells me that the 
'system' has correctly recognised the ScanLogic bit there appears to be 
no way of reaching the disk device on the other side of the bridge  :-(
