On saturday, 07-Sep-2002, I've made test runs with RC1. First, clean install of 8.2 and upgrade to 9.0 RC1. Second, clean install of 9.0 RC1 from scratch.
My home machine info can be found here: <http://olo.office.altkom.com.pl/domowa/qa/mandrake/9.0/rc1/home_machine/> machine.html describes hardware specs. I've found several problems that I'm going to describe in separate mails on this list. -=======================- Problem 2: X dies after 1st boot Full details, HTML version of this report here: <http://olo.office.altkom.com.pl/domowa/qa/mandrake/9.0/rc1/home_machine/problems/X_dies_on_1st_boot/info.html> -===========- X dies after 1st boot I believe this is the same problem as reported earlier on the list with the subjects "RC1: KDM after install drops to shell.", "XF86/login bombs out for Radeon 8500", "9.0 BETA - Bug report / RC1 kdm startup failure" and in the Bugzilla #104 <https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=104> (well, actually error messages in bugzilla #104 seem to be unrelated, see below). Symptoms: After first boot (after installation), X and KDM start up. After about half a minute, X dies. It is possible to login to an lightweight environment like IceWM and even start a couple of xterms before X dies. After second boot, everything works OK This is what is visible in the logs at the time of death of X: Sep 7 15:28:02 localhost kernel: SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00 Sep 7 15:28:02 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module scsi_hostadapter Sep 7 15:28:02 localhost last message repeated 3 times Sep 7 15:28:07 localhost mandrake_firstime: Building Mozilla registry succeeded *Sep 7 15:28:07 localhost kdm[1055]: Unknown session exit code from manager process Sep 7 15:28:07 localhost kdm[1055]: Rescanning all config files* Sep 7 15:28:07 localhost kdm_config[2183]: Unrecognized key 'AllowShutdown' at /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc:42 Sep 7 15:28:07 localhost kdm_config[2183]: Unrecognized key 'NoUsers' at /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc:58 Sep 7 15:28:07 localhost kdm_config[2183]: Unrecognized key 'Users' at /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc:64 Sep 7 15:28:07 localhost kdm_config[2183]: Unrecognized key 'AllowShutdown' at /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc:73 Sep 7 15:29:23 localhost login(pam_unix)[2179]: session opened for user root by (uid=0) Entries I suspect are in *bold*. The remaining kdm_config messages are present in subsequent X launches too, when everything works OK. There's also an error message in "/var/log/kdm.log <http://olo.office.altkom.com.pl/domowa/qa/mandrake/9.0/rc1/home_machine/problems/X_dies_on_1st_boot/kdm.log_after_1st_boot>": XFree86 Version 4.2.0 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) Release Date: 11 March 2002 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems.
