 alexh : 09/09 11:59 : Incident created BACKGROUND: I'm
an experienced C/C programmer and UNIX system administrator
(14 years experience) and have been using Linux for several
years now. Sorry, but I don't have time to join the Cooker
mailing lists right now.

Some of the comments are quite trivial, but I'll make them
anyway.

Carried out an Expert Install of RC1:

1) Hard drive detection:

- "Do you have any disc/SCSI interfaces ?" - Very confusing
question. Do IDE disks count as examples of "disc" ? If you
say yes, and look on the list, you get "eata", "eata_dma" and
"eata_pio". Are these something to do with IDE disks
(suggesting the answer to the first question was yes) ?

2) Configure mouse:

- Chose PS/2 -> Other -> Microsoft Explorer. Had to press
most/all of the buttons before it would register properly.
Text "Please test the mouse" might be better as something
like "Please test the mouse by moving it around and pressing
all buttons".

3) Security:

- "Security Administrator (login or email)". What does this
refer to ? Why isn't there any (brief) explanation in the
help text below ? Does this allow a special "security
administrator" user to be set up ? If so, does this tie in
with user creation later on in the setup process ?

4) Choose packages to install:

- Asks whether I have "download rc1 Installation CD 2" and
"download rc1 international CD". Is the "international CD"
download rc1 Installation CD 3 ? I assume yes, but this is
confusing.

- Trivial: On the Package Group Selection box, the popup text
would be more readable if it was a different colour to the
other text, or had a different background colour, or if its
background had a border.

- I selected all package groups to be installed, but looking
through the individual packages shows some packages shown as
"Importance: MUST HAVE" as not having been selected -
defeating the purpose of this description. The first example
of this was 'cups-drivers'.

- No offence to Canadians, but why is aspell-en_CA selected,
and why is it a "MUST HAVE" package for a UK install ?

- "Graphical Environment" package section could use a "Common
Packages" subsection to avoid the package repetition in the
KDE, GNOME and Other subsections.

- "You have selected the following servers:..... These
services are activated by default". Why not give the user the
choice whether or not they'll be activated before printing
this warning ? Or change the warning to say that the user
will be given the chance to configure which services start as
part of the installation process ?

5) Add a user:

- Trivial: Nice selection of icons, but only one
"professional"-looking icon, and it looks distinctly male.
Would be nice to have a small selection of silhouette-type
icons, including at least one female.

6) Configure networking:

- Not everyone uses (or understands) fully-qualified domain
names (especially the majority of dial-up internet users, but
also people who set up small home or office networks). Could
the setup be changed to be able cope with the setting of a
simple hostname (perhaps use a default dummy domain if none
is supplied) ?

- "Proxies configuration": I want to use squid or privoxy on
the newly-installed machine as my proxy. In this situation,
it is confusing knowing what to type here - there is no help
text either. Perhaps the use of squid or privoxy as local
proxies could be added to the setup (if they haven't already
- I didn't try this here).

7) Summary:

- No prompt to enter any printer - I had to spot that the
selection configured (remote CUPS server) was wrong. When
configuring an HP 970 Cxi, it was very difficult to determine
which print mode had been selected by default for the hpijs
driver (the DPI figure had scrolled out of the input box).
