OK, I got tired of trying to make the rc1 kernel work with my computer. Everything worked beautifully except my GeForce II card with Unreal Tournament (the only game I play) and when shutting down the system (once in a blue moon) it would not shutdown/reboot. Compile the source fine. Used it for weeks fine. But everytime I want to minimize the Unreal Tournament game and maximize back (like when trying to answer back to some nerd asking me something over GAIM) it starts to crap out badly... the screen freezes, and it comes back after some time, and it repeats again and again forever... until I kill it :-)
But, I know that one probably belongs to the Kernel Hackers at Nvidia ... so I went back to my ol' trusty 2.4.18.8.1mdk-1-3mdk (last update for 8.2). Compile the src.rpm for NVDIA_kernel/NVIDIA_GLX (yes tainted the MF) and everything works beautifully again.... ... well, not really, when I upgraded my system to rc1, I started getting crazy errors when I rebooted the system (or shutdown): "umount: device or resource busy..." "umount: /dev/DRIVEHERE" "umount: /usr: Illegal seek" "Init: no more process left in this run level" ... and then stays there forever... if I hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE I get: "Shutdown:warning:cannot open /var/run/shutdown.pid" Now, I had seen that error before a lot, but it tends to go away by itself (go figure). I wonder if that's a known error or if there is something I can do about it... any thoughts? My configuration: 352MB ram 2 ethernet cards (one active) 1 scsi card (might be the source of the problem) with 3 devices attached USB ports (6) all full with crap and normal CD writer (external scsi 2), zip (scsi 1), scanner (scsi 1), cdrom (DEC, ide) winmodem (lucent chip (?)) pretty much everything generic... ----)(----- Luis Mondesi System Administrator/Web developer LatinoMixed.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] You think Oedipus had a problem -- Adam was Eve's mother.
