Lately I've been doing this...

cdrecord -v speed=8 dev=0,2,0 -dao driveropts=burnfree 
/home/allen/play/MandrakeLinux-9.0rc2-CD3.i586.iso

This seems to have made CD1 very reliable.

EXCEPT that I encounter the same problems you do when
trying to install into VMWare under main OS WinXP.

Maybe there is some timing issue with the newer installer
or the kernel that was not an issue with the older installer
or kernel from 8.2.

I got the feeling from trying to use VMWare that there is definitely some
timing difference now that wasn't there before.
