The network wizard, whether by bug or design, will allow you to fail loading a driver and then proceed on to set configuration data, at least in expert mode.
This is actually a good thing, because otherwise there would be no way to enter configuration data if the driver you need is not in the list of drivers presented. However, it is not at all intuitive, and there should really be a driver list entry called "other driver not listed here" or something similar that allows you to skip trying to load a driver module and move on to supplying configuration info like IP address, DNS, DHCP/static, etc. At least in expert mode.
