I just tried to use another thing: startx! With that I got both heads with display, the first one showing a red background, the second one showd the normal Mandrake-blue background, both had the full menu/task bar. So Bryan is correct in indicating that gnome does not have a second head configuration (or whatever) with the patched default configuration (without xinerama).
