That's because it's a Red Hat patch. It's not part of standard GNOME2.
Standard settings ought to be fine for CRTs. For LCDs, you can enable
subpixel hinting by editing /etc/X11/XftConfig and adding this section
at the end:

match edit rgba = rgb;

On some screens, = bgr instead of = rgb looks better. Experiment. This
stuff obviously won't be patched into MDK 9, since we're in
freeze...dunno if it's going to roll back into main GNOME2, or be
patched into MDK, in future.
