Aaack, my bad. You have to make {config,menuconfig,xconfig} after
make mrproper. Another solution is to make oldconfig, but that gives
you a stock Mandrake kernel and module configuration, and that's not
what you wanted.

I am far from authoritative on this, but I would imagine that a kernel
compiled with athlon optimizations would have difficulty loading modules
that were compiled with Pentium optimizations. Feel free to prove me
wrong though :)
