Ok, this was probably related to the buggy 2.4 kernel with C3 detected as a i686, right? Other than that, if you have the contrib during install, the install will install a 2.2 kernel, select "linux-2.2" in the boot menu and it should work (but linux-2.2 is not the default choice).
