As I reported earlier (not directly to this list), when I tried doing a
fresh install of Mandrake (versions 8.2, 9.0 beta 4, and 9.0 rc 2), the
X installation failed. No matter what screen resolution or color depth
I used, it always complained that it could not find any usable screen
configuration.

After _much_ experimentation (a result of downloading a fresh binary
4.2.0 install from xfree86.org, and looking at its error messages, which
suggested the solution), I've finally solved the problem. All I had to
do was to add one option to XF86Config-4, under Section "Device" (for
the ATI card):

    Option "CrtScreen"

Now it works like a champ!

Unfortunately, I'm very far from understanding any of this XFree86
configuration stuff, so I don't know what the significance of this
option is.

Thought you might like to know...
